"It was important for us to launch a pilot initiative that offers practical, sustainable and significant assistance to the job seeker," says Head of Careers24, Marc Privett. "We approached Luvuyo Rani, Managing Director of Silulo Ulutho Technologies with the idea of forging a partnership with us to equip students to find employment post their studies."
"We saw the partnership as a key component for our success because while we continue to expand, our biggest challenge is trying to assist students in finding employment," says Rani. "This initiative gave students a holistic view of what it involves to be a successful job seeker and also provided them with the right tools to become independent and to own their careers."
Learn to Earn was identified as the training partner and their Job Readiness Initiative was adapted to incorporate Careers24 content. The course aimed to upskill, empower and effectively equip students for the job market. "Over a period of four weeks, covering issues ranging from Personal Identity, Interpersonal Relationships, Workplace Communication, Career Goals and Work Ethics, we impacted the lives of 107 students," says Lloyd Williams, Project Manager and Association Coordinator at Learn to Earn. "These students are now actively becoming contributors to the South African economy".
The latest statistics on unemployment by Statistics South Africa reported that the jobless rate increased from 24.30% in the fourth quarter of 2014 to 26.40% in the first quarter of 2015 (an increase of 2.10%). A June 2015 study on national and provincial labour market trends among the youth showed that youth unemployment rose significantly from 32.7% to 36.9% between 2008 and 2015. These stats show that there are significant benefits for a tangible project that equips unemployed job seekers with the tools needed to enter into the job market.
As part of its commitment, Careers24 will further monitor the success of the students and invite recruiters to engage with the process. "This collaborative framework aims to bridge the gap between the market and the students who are in search of employment, and we have faith that the recruiters who join us on this journey, will find suitable candidates," says Privett.
"A key ingredient to Silulo's success is to ignite passion in students who have a dream and the desire to study further, and this initiative provided students with the confidence to take control of their lives," adds Rani.
The Job Readiness Iniatiative is an example of how industries can actively partner in breaking the cycle of poverty by impacting a job seeker's life on a very real level. "A job alone cannot do this, we need to contribute towards the transformation of communities by developing people holistically," concludes Williams.
